¶ Step 1: Understand Network Types
- Ethernet (Wired): Uses LAN cable, stable and fast connection
- Wireless (Wi-Fi): Uses radio signals, flexible but depends on signal strength
- Open Device Manager
- Expand Network adapters
- Ensure Ethernet/Wireless adapters are enabled
- Install or update drivers if missing or disabled
- Plug LAN cable into PC and router/switch
- Network usually connects automatically (DHCP)
- Verify connection using:
- Network icon in system tray
ipconfig to confirm IP address
- Click Wi-Fi icon in taskbar
- Turn Wi-Fi ON
- Select available network (SSID)
- Enter Wi-Fi password
- Confirm connection status
- Default: Automatic (DHCP) recommended
- For static IP:
- Network Settings → Adapter options
- IPv4 properties → Set IP, Subnet, Gateway, DNS
- Verify with
ipconfig /all
- Check internet access via browser
- Test network using:
ping 8.8.8.8
ping google.com
- No response indicates network or DNS issue
- Disable and re-enable network adapter
- Restart router/modem
- Forget and reconnect Wi-Fi network
- Run Network Troubleshooter
- Update or reinstall network drivers
- Prefer Ethernet for offices and critical work
- Use strong Wi-Fi passwords
- Avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive tasks
- Keep network drivers and Windows updated
- Place router centrally for better Wi-Fi coverage
