¶ VPN, Proxy, and Firewall Settings
¶ Step 1: Understand the Purpose
- VPN (Virtual Private Network): Creates an encrypted tunnel to securely access remote networks
- Proxy: Acts as an intermediary between user and internet for filtering, caching, or anonymity
- Firewall: Controls inbound and outbound network traffic based on security rules
- Open Settings → Network & Internet → VPN
- Add VPN connection (server address, VPN type, credentials)
- Connect to VPN when secure or remote access is required
- Verify connection by checking new IP address or accessing internal resources
- Secure remote office access
- Work-from-home connectivity
- Protect data on public Wi-Fi
- Access internal servers and applications
- Open Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy
- Enable Automatic proxy setup (PAC file or script) if provided
- Or configure Manual proxy (IP address and port)
- Apply settings and test internet access
- Web filtering and content control
- Bandwidth management
- Monitoring user internet activity
- Bypassing direct internet access restrictions
- Open Windows Defender Firewall
- Check firewall status for Domain, Private, and Public networks
- Allow or block applications through firewall
- Create inbound and outbound rules for specific ports or programs
- Disable VPN temporarily to test internet access
- Verify proxy settings are not misconfigured
- Check firewall rules blocking required ports
- Test connectivity using
ping or tracert
- Use VPN only when required to avoid speed issues
- Avoid unnecessary proxy settings on client systems
- Keep firewall always enabled
- Allow only required ports and applications
- Review firewall and VPN settings regularly
